Protecting your computer from viruses and Malware

When it comes to computers, there are so many vulnerabilities I don't even know where to start;
Viruses, adware, bloatware, spyware, worms, windows exploits... the list goes on for so long it's sometimes very hard to keep up and you forget a thing or two.

  • Anti-Virus programs

There is a wide variety of programs out there that protect against viruses, or at least they say they do.

Avast
McAfee
Norton
AVG
Microsoft Security Suite
And these are just a few of the many available...

If it came to a personal choice, I would go with MSS, Microsoft Security Suite (or MSSE, microsoft security essentials) because it is:
1) already integrated in Windows (windows 8), easily accessible for windows 7 & Vista
2) Free of charge
3) Easy to use ( friendly user interface)
4) Does what I need it to do.
5) Uses very little resources.

I'm not using this to say MSSE is better than the competition, it has its flaws, but it's what I am using and what I recommend to my customers.

  • Anti-Malware and anti-PUP(Potentially Unwanted Programs)
Malware, short for malicious software, is any software used to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems. It can appear in the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software. 'Malware' is a general term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software. The term badware is sometimes used, and applied to both true (malicious) malware and unintentionally harmful software.

In a nutshell: KEEP AWAY.
Most A-V software suites have one integrated in them and perform a malware scan as they scan for viruses, but for me, the one I trust is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It does an Amazing job removing malware, rootkits and PUPs from my systems and from systems that I assemble for my clients. Highly recommended you get the free version and eventually invest in a full license to get the real-time protection.
